  22. 3D Studio is very fast and capable and certainly has been one of the driving
  23. forces for a better faster LW. Currently, a render farm situation makes 3DS
  24. very attractive. Besides being cheaper, its typically faster as well (from
  25. what I have seen). But LW has surpassed it as far as functionality is
  26. concerned (esp. for character animation), and I have always preferred LW's
  27. interface over 3DS. The speed/cost per seat issue has certainly become a
  28. concern at NewTek, and projects like seaQuest really fuel those concerns.
  29. What they will ultimately do is unkown to me, but the situation must
  30. change to remain competitive in the more high-end productions. Anyway, for
  31. my use, the advantages of LW still outway the disadvantages when compared to
  32. 3DS. But I must confess that I have been looking at modelers on other platforms
  33. for spline patch capabilities and that includes 3DS.

  37. I haven't talked to them lately but it was close to a dozen people and
  38. over 60 machines. I'm not sure what it is currently.

  42. This would be good but it would have to be VERY fast and available very
  43. soon. If this is not possible, one of the best alternatives I see is a LW
  44. port to the new SGI Indy that was just announced. Its R4000 based with
  45. future upgrades to the R4400 (very fast) and has a base price of $4995.
  46. A LW network with a bunch of new Indys and Amigas would be quite cool.

  56. I really hope the 3rd party stuff explodes. There are so many opportunities
  57. there for both LW and Modeler. But as far as a 3rd party Modeler replacement
  58. goes, that would be a great deal of work. I'd rather pester Stuart for new
  59. features :-)
